I'm a good tenant, but I have bad credit from student loans, but now I can't find a new place? I pay my rent on time, am quiet and respectful, and generally get along with everyone. However, I have bad credit from some student loans I defaulted on over 10 years ago which is still on my credit report. In addition to this, I rented for 3 years from a close family member who decided to suddenly sell the property(because her ex was claiming they bought it while they were still married or that's the story I found out later) . She had gone on about how it was her property 'paid in cash' all that time, so I'm thinking she didn't tell me until the last minute because she was embarrassed of lying about who really owned it. Anyway, I digress, I told her that my children and I needed time to find a new place but she started getting hostile and called the police. Who then removed us from the property even though I had a lease with this family member. I know it's unfair, but sadly these things happen all the time here. We had to move into a hotel and of course she wouldn't give me a reference because she was so angry when I stood up for myself and my kids. Now we are getting really cramped and tired of the situation so I want to move us to a new place. Even though I have a great reference from the manager of our hotel, it's not enough. I still can't find a new rental. What can I say on my rental applications that is honest but doesn't sound so unfortunate? LANDLORD: I received my loans when I was still married. My ex husband was also a student, therefore, as I was the 'primary caretaker' I received 85% of the loan load, and I had to pay that much back without child support. I would like to add that I worked 1 full time job and 2 part time jobs to pay off my student loans.. I am not dishonest and these loan defaults are very old. I learned my lesson and purposely did not get any sort of credit card or loan since. This is the kind of stereotyping that goes on with landlords. Such is life, I suppose.
