Where is the best place to find direct student loans? I am attending UCSB in a month and it is going to cost me 7-8k per quarter. What loans would be best for me? Obviously direct subsidized loans would be the best, but is it better to get government loans or loans from the bank or where? Is there a website that compares different loan companies?
Can I start paying off my direct student loans before the grace period? This is my first time taking in a loan, so I don't know much about it. The direct student loans site has "Repayment" options, such as Standard, Graduated, and so on. Instead of going along with one of the repayment options, can I just make my own payment plan before the grace period? Thanks in advance.
Republicans – Are Any Of You Against Obama’s Direct Student Loans? (2010) Is there anybody out there who is actually disappointed with Obama’s policy to cut out banks as the middle-men for student loans? This policy shall save the federal government $64 billion over ten years. (Can right-wingers just admit that this is a good policy by Obama?)
question about direct student loans? last term was my first year with student loans. Well my very first term was a summer class and I failed it because it was so hard. I still got financial aid for fall term though and got all A's that term. Now this term I think I am going to fail a class. I have been trying to do good but its a hard accounting class. I am passing my other class though. I think I might be put on probation for the first time though for fall 2012. Can I still qualify for the direct loan if I dont pass 6 credits this term? Im really trying but I know I am not going to pass the accounting class.
How do I consolidtae multiple student loans? My wife has a student loan thru the government(direct loans) and a student loan thru sallie mae. Can we consolidate those into one loan? SOmeone told us that the sallie mae loan will be harder to consolidate because its private? Can we even consolidate both loans into one?
Question about Direct Loans for student loans? My wife has been getting letters from the Direct Loans about an Income Contingent Repayment Plan. We have sent the information they ask for about 5 times already. We have sent in our tax information, proof that she doesnt work, only me, and I signed the papers but it says that our tax information was missing or incomplete, and that we signed in pencil( I never sign in pencil) and that my information was needed but not included but thats not true. I sent in everything, tax infromation, paychek stubs and I signed the form. This was the 5th time they said they were unable to process under the ICR. What else should I do because this is frustrating?
The economy is getting worst by the day and I have student loans growing interest? How can I pay them now? I have $25,000 in student loans, all from Direct Loans. My problem is that I am currently defaulting my loans and interest is growing like the monster it is. I'm going to graduate this fall semester in a degree in Information Systems. How is the job market for IS/IT positions today? Are there any alternate fields I can go into with a BS degree in Business with a concentration in Information Systems? Sorry, I mean deferring not defaulting. Sorry for any confusion.
Financial responsibility for student loans made before marriage? Say you had $100,000 in debt from federal direct student loans. You account is current but it is current because you have been given a deferment that is set to expire in a year. During that time, you get married. When your student loan deferment expires, you are unable to pay & you default on your loans for some reason. Would they be able to come after your spouse for the amount you owe, even though you were not married when you signed the promissary note nor were you married when the account went into repayment or you requested the deferment that was granted?
Why did I not get all of my excess funds from my student loans? I am attending university of phoenix axia college. I applied for and got approved for the maximum amount of student loans. Which is 9500 Direct loans sent me a letter saying I should get 4727 back but my adviser said I am only getting 2000 back. I know my friends that attended other schools got half after 3 weeks of classes and the rest after the semester was over, if that was the case wouldn't my adviser have said something to me?
can i get new student loans if my old loans are in consolidation? sad story....lost my job, divorced, Bal bla bla, i went into default with my loans. My federal student loans are now consolidated thru the program that Direct loans works with. I have paid them twice and the third is in the mail. My question is, am I eligible for more federal student loans, so i can go back to school? please cite your information, so i know the information is trustwourthy. Thank you!
How do I declare bankruptcy to get rid of student loans? I owe about 220,000 in student loans (75,000 in private loans, 110,000 from direct loans (sub and unsub) and the rest from AES (sub and unsub)) plus 5,000 credit card debt and I just CAN'T get a job in this economy. Is there anyway to claim bankruptcy and get rid of the student loans?
Direct Loans Billing Statement...? I just received a billing statement from Direct Loans (Student Loans) and it's asking for a payment? I just started college and I'm on the Standard Repayment Plan. Why is it asking me for payment (200 dollars!) Do I just ignore this letter until I graduate? Also, for some reason it's says "NET DISBURSEMENT ACTIVITY $4,000.00". That should not be there, I don't know why it added extra money. Does anyone have any idea why it's there? Turns out it was a loan for my parents which makes it even worse.
How lond does it take to process a student loan from Direct Loans? I am a student from California and I am going to be going to school out of state next semester. I cannot register until I have gone through orientation and that is scheduled for 5 days before the beginning of the semester so I was wondering if anyone knows how long it will talk to process it? I am going to contact the Financial Aid office on monday, but I just want a heads up so if anyone has been through the same thing, please let me know. I really worried about this and any useful information would be greatly appreciated.
Direct Loans Total & Permanent Disability Student Loan Disharge Question? Direct Loans sent me a letter saying my disabled daughter qualifies for a conditional discharge and to qualify for a final discharge, she must meet the requirements for three years beginning on the date she became permanently disabled as certified by her doctor. The doctor certified her permanently disabled over three years ago on the form but when I called Direct Loans they said they used to go by that but now its three years since when the form was signed by the doctor so that makes it five years from the actual date the doctor said she became permanently disabled. I feel they should honor the letter they sent me but what can I do its the government and we are poverty line poor! What do you think? BTW, I finally found online "As of July 1, 2008, doctors are no longer required to certify the date that your disability began. Instead, the doctor only has to certify that you are totally and permanently disabled as of the date of application for discharge. [The doctor filled the form on December of 2008 and signed she had become permanently disabled in 2006. We were given the old form which asked when] ... The Department issued a new application form on August 16, 2010. Borrowers that applied after July 1, 2010, but before the new form was available or who otherwise use the old form, should be evaluated under the new standards." [I just feel they should have explained it better then give us old forms with very different info or should have honored the old info. I've just seen online a lot of people giving out wrong info that to get such a discharge, its 3 years form the date your doctor certifies you disabled, IT'S NOT ANYMORE, ITS WHEN THE DOCTOR SIGNS THE FORM AND YOU MAIL IT IN. SO THE DATE YOU DOCTOR SIGNS IT, ITS 3 YEARS FROM THAT (I REPEAT, NOT ANYMORE FROM THE DATE YOU BECAME PERMANENTLY DISABLED). My daughter had an old form that the doctor was told to list when the permanent disability began and the conditional letter response they sent her was old form so it said the three years goes back to that date the doctor said she became permanently disabled. http://www.studentloanborrowerassistance.org/loan-cancellation/disability-and-death/
Private student loans, direct-to-student? Hi guys, I need to take out a private loan for about 20k for tuition, books, housing, new laptop, etc. Only problem is all of the websites and banks that offer private student loans send them directly to the financial aid office at my school, and my school does not disburse the money until August (3 months from now) and I need the money ASAP. Anyone know any reliable websites that send the money directly to the student or other solutions? Thanks!
How do I use student loans to pay for housing? I am gOing to apply for a student loan this week and need to use it to pay all my tuition and ten the rest for housing. How do I get the student loans direct deposited to my bank account? I need to pay for my semester of rent in the next 3 weeks. Is this a possible time window?
Summer Direct Student Loans 2010-2011 are LATE!? It's closely approaching August, yet I haven't received ANY student aid for the summer. I had to pay for my books online (the cheapest I could find), and basically had no loans or grants to pay my school balance. Fall is almost around the corner (August 29th), yet because of Obama's new plan, my loans are extremely late. What do I do? The financial aid @ my college keeps putting me off, explaining that their new "COD" system is hard to understand and is to blame for their errors on our "Loan Origination Records". What does it all mean, and are their any rules to how long they can procrastinate on disbursing the loan?
How and when do I get money from my federal student loans? I took out a Federal Direct Student Subsidized Loan, Federal Direct Student Unsubsidized Loan, and the Federal Perkins Loan. I want to use the leftover money (the money not being used to pay for tuition and room and board) for books. When would I get that? Does the school give me a check or something? That's what I heard they do...
Do all eligible federal student loans have to be included when you consolidate? I consolidated my undergraduate federal student loans a while back fixed @ 3.25%. I now have two seperate graduate student loans (also federal) that I would like to consolidate at a fixed rate so I can pay them off more easily. My undergraduate loan is a higher amount than my graduate loans combined and at a very favorable interest rate. Can I consolidate only my two new loans without including my low interest loan? I would not go through a private company, but rather through "Direct Loans." Having a singe payment is not my priority, I am looking for a fixed interest rate (preferably the lowest possible).
What happens to the status of student loans if I transfer undergraduate schools? I just transferred undergraduate schools and still have some student loans from my previous school (Sallie Mae and Federal Direct loans). Is there some sort of clearing house that my new enrollment status will be sent to so that the loan agencies know that I haven't just stopped going to school (and thus cause my loan payments to become due)? Or must I obtain enrollment verification from my current school and send it to each loan agency myself?
Will credit card debt and student loans deny me from obtaining a secret clearance for the US Army? Will i be denied a secret clearance? I have less than $3000 in credit card debt and I have a Direct Loan(student loan) for $7000. I have been late a few times on my credit cards, but all my balances are current and below the balance line. I also had a collector call me for an $86 payment that was due to a doctor. I was two months over the age of 18 when I went to the doctors, the insurance was supposed to cover it but my parents never took care of it...so since I was over 18 the collector contacted me about it. I paid as soon as they called over the phone. I'm just worried I will get denied for my clearance. I ship out to BCT at the end of may. So will these factors deny me from obtaining my secret clearance?
Where are some good sites for subsidized student loans? I already got the Direct Loan (I think Stafford) and the Perkins Loan, but I'm still short $2000. Anyone know of a good student loan that doesn't require a credit check ( I have no credit history), can be payed back 3-6 months after graduation, and preferebly is subsidized? I only need a max of $4000. Thank you for your help.
is it smart to pay off student loans with a credit card? lets assume i can find a way to have my credit card pay for my direct loans. credit card is 0% apr for 12 months and loans is 3.5% fixed. Assuming i can pay off everything in 12 months, should i do it? does it look bad on my credit report since students loans are "legit" while credit cards are "debt"?
Should i pay the interest on my student loans starting now? I got this letter from direct loans, the u.s department of education telling me i have a balance of about 72 on interest on my student loans. should i pay this off right now or wait until i graduate? I was under the impression that I wasn't going to have to pay anything until about six months after graduation :l. help?
Will the Army Loan Repayment Program pay off student loans from banks? I noticed that the listed loans for college that they will pay off are these: •Auxiliary Loan Assistance for Students •Stafford Student Loan •Parents Loans for Undergraduate Students •Consolidated Loan Program •Federally Insured Student Loans •Perkins Loan, formerly known as the National Direct Student Loan •Supplemental Loans for Students But I was wondering can't I also go to a bank too like Wells Fargo or Bank of America, or does it have to be from one of these off of the list? And if it has to be off of this list, then which one loan should I pick?
If I've gotten student loans before, can I get any more in the future? Actually my question is a little more complex than that in the title. I've been accepted into a college, and in order to go, I need some financial aid. So, the school sent me a financial aid form to fill out and send back to them. At the end of the form, there is a terms & conditions section that I have to agree to in order to be eligible for aid. One of the the terms is as follows: "I certify that I AM NOT in default or owe a refund at ANY institution of post secondary education for a Student Loan, PLUS loan, Federal Insured Student Loan, PELL or FSEOG Grants, College Work Study or National Direct Student Loan." I know what it means to be in default with a loan, but what I'm not completely certain of is what it means to owe a "refund" to a loan. Does that mean if I am making payments on a loan (or loans) as of right now, I can't apply for any more loans? I presently do owe on some loans, and I just want to make sure that the whole "owing a refund" thing doesn't mean that I won't be eligible for more aid. Anyways, if anybody out there can help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to sign the form and lie to my school... Just wanna make sure if I sign it, I understand completely the terms and conditions. Thank you much! :-)
question about federal direct loans? I just went online and applied for a federal direct student loan. The financial aid office told me they are not based on credit. Is this true? How do I know if I qualify? how does it work? I submitted the entrance counselling and the promisory note online a few minutes ago.
Need help with my student loans? Ok so heres my problem. I was enrolled full time in one school. I finished up a semester there and decided to change to another college. I have Direct Student loans. Do I need to change the school info on those so i get them or will the school do it? Thanks So Much for your help in this.
Since when is Sallie Mae administering Direct Loans? Is this new? I just got emails and letters about Sallie Mae being the new contractor for my student loans. I thought this was outlawed so that all direct student loans now come from and are totally administered by the government. Now, even though Sallie Mae is not "technically" the third-party lender for federal loans, it's the "administrator" because they outbid other companies? WTF? More government being contracted out? Is this the new Republican congress at work here reversing or modifying the Obama-Pelosi bill or what? Sallie Mae is sleazy. I had a friend who's in debt tens of thousands of dollars in pseudo-direct loans through them and never even got a degree from one of those shady for-profit fashion and culinary corporation outfits. Kick-backs, vacation deals to counselors to meet loan quotas, etc. I want nothing to do with them. Now I’m wishing this was a case of identity theft so I could quickly cut off any connection with them.
Shouldn't I have received papers about my student loans? I had to take out student loans this year (around $5000). Every time I check NSLDS site it's only showing my pell grant. Where can I find my direct loans so I can start paying them back? I checked that site and it said I didn't have an account with them. I guess I'll have to call in the morning.
What's the best way to pay off student loans? okay, these loans have been consolodated through "Direct Loans" "US Dept. of Education", we pay on it every month but the interest is killing us! Is there a such thing as transferring this debt to some place more affordable?(Loan totals $22,000.00). I just need to know if the way we are currently paying it is the best/smartest/only way to go.
Do federal student loans and Pell Grant affect my eligibility for food stamps in GA? I get a subsidized direct loan and full Pell Grant, and wondered if this would affect my eligibility. Also, as a secondary question, would an AmeriCorps stipend count as income? And would the 25 hours per week working with the program for that stipend count towards the 20 hour-weekly minimum work hours for full-time students? Thanks!
any info on direct student loans? i am 17 and about to start school the thing is i cant go to school, work, watch my 2 kids & do homework so im looking into loans. i was told i needed a direct student loan how do i go about getting & i could use some good advice.
Student Direct Loans? I am receiving a FDSL at my current college for this semester. I am planning on transferring to a different college in the fall semester and do not anticipate needing to apply for any further loans. When will I need to begin repaying my loan? Would I still be able to defer repayment until I am done with school or would I need to repay after the 6 month grace period of leaving my current school?
best company to consolidate student loans with?? I currently have 4 student loans out. One in a small loan I plan on taking care of myself. One is Sallie Mae. One is a Federal loan and one is a Direct Loan. I want to reconsolidate my loans and am wondering which company offers the lowest interest rate?
My student loans were consolidated time and time again. In the end, two different agencies claimed I owed them? Only one could provide me with copies of original loan paperwork, so I paid them, (multiple thousands of dollars now over the years), and yet the other (HESC) has hounded me non-stop. This year, they took (offset) my tax refund even though I have paid my student loans via Direct Loans. I supplied them with receipts, statements and private documents...they in return have provided me with NOTHING. No proof of loan, no response. No one will help me and they took my tax refund and are ruining my reputation and credit. What can I do?
Does Direct Loans (William D Ford) settle students loans? I owe over $16,000 and wondered if Direct Loans ever settles. I think my initial loan was around $12,000 and have been on income contingent so no payments, but still being charged interest and they capitalize it once a year, so almost $5000 is interest alone. If so, any idea what they might settle for? Thanks for any help!
My tax refund was erroneously taken (offset) for student loans I already paid. What do I do? I spoke to the offset people at Dept of Treasury and they said I needed to take it up with the place that placed the loan in offset hands. I did that and even showed them proof that I paid off all of my student loans via Direct Loans (gave them my year-end statement) and they are still convinced I owe this debt to them. They won't listen or help or anything. I have no idea what to do. They basically stole my refund with no proof I owe them anything, because I don't! Help!
Chase cancels their private student loans? Is anyone else feeling pretty helpless, now that Chase canceled the last direct to student loan you can get? They still have their school certified loan, but many people use the direct to student one for books and rent. I know, it really does. I only have a little left to go before I graduate, but the government loans won't cover all my costs. It really does suck.
Best company for giving out student loans? Ok I have the federal direct sub loan and other things like the pell grant etc. But I still have to cough up 3,000 dollars and I was wondering what is the best company that gives students, student loans?
How do student loans work, and what are my options for applying for graduate student loans? I want to apply for a Master's Program at Copenhagen University... but have no money! Where exactly do I start? I know very little about student loans in general, and especially little about them when studying internationally, especially at the graduate level. Do I need to talk to the University? How do direct to consumer loans work? Is it super difficult to get student loans?
Need to consolidate student loans. Please help!? I have 4 difft student loans. I need to consolidate into one payment. I need to still have the option to defer later when return for grad school. The ting is, I want a really good interest rate and I have difft types of loans. I have private loans and other loans. I have salie mae, federal direct, iowa student loan liquidity, and ECSI. Really need help on who to consolidate with and which loans I can consolidate. Please help
What does the term "interest capitalization" mean in terms of loans (student loans in particular)? The grace period for my student loan is about to end, and I've found that the interest has accumulated since graduation until now. On my statement, Direct Loan says the following: "To avoid or reduce interest capitalization at the time of entering repayment, you can choose to pay all or a portion of your Total Unpaid Interest now. If you choose to pay later, please see the Payment Information section of this notice for more specific payment information." What does that mean? I have about $700 in interest plus the amount of money I'm expected to pay for my repayment plan starting next month. So what happens if I choose to start paying the interest down after I start repayment?
Can I put private education loans in my federal consolidation loan? I was just called by Sally Mae; the very rude collection agent was demanding that I make payment immediately for my loan that is 60 days overdue. I am currently doing the paperwork for a William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan to consolidate all of my student loans together. The agent told me that would not take care of this loan because it is a private student loan not a federal. Is this true? What options do I have if any to get all of my loans consolidated together?
how do I consoldidate my private student loans with bad credit? I don't know what to do. I have 78k in combined federal and private student loans. I have already graduated and have had to put my loans in to forbearance because I cannot afford the monthly payment that is due. I have loans through the evil corporation of Sallie mae. Recently, I found out that they no longer consolidate period and that there is really no way to lower my monthly payment. I found a company that will take over my federal loans, but not my Private loans. They want $430 just for my private loans. I just can only pay them about two hundred of that hoping my account wont default. But that is it! I am up to my neck in bills. I am on the verge of getting a second job. I tried calling d ford and direct loan, but they can't do the private loans. Is there any legit company that can consolidate my private student loans. I just need to lower the monthly payment. Sallie Mae is not working with me. Help!
Direct student loan -vs- non direct loan HELP? I am so confused. I took loans out 10 years ago for school, and been in default with the guaranty agency paying default claims. Unemployed all this time. Now back at work this next week, want to get things squared away but SO very confused. I pulled up with a PIN non direct and direct loans ttl $77,000. Seems very wrong? Anyways, what can I do as I have called, emailed and tried to get answers and just get a run around. Should I just WAIT until they catch up to my income from work and send me a letter? Right now they have always tried to garnish IRS refunds of my spouse AGAIN read my question. I have called and called and keep getting another number to call and do not know WHERE or WHO really holds this loan. The IRS says one loan is with TG, rest are US DEPT ed now but they keep referring me off.... Unfortunately all the answers so are the info I know. yes i called the school. Yes I have tried and tried and I started at the ed.gov site. I realize its bad.
where to get a direct student loan at a decent interest rate? i've used sallie mae...they take forever, they give the money to my school and my school sets a 10k cap for the year in student loans. HOWEVER the cost of tuition + fees are 4k+ without books included...i can't live on 6k a year in a major city. the school also decides when i get this money and almost everyone who works in the financial aid office doesn't speak english or speaks some broken english and it is extremely frusterating. i used a direct loan from soveriegn bank a while back, it was much less frusterating and a lot quicker but the interest rate was ridiculous. also the sallie mae website is less than informative when you are looking to take out a new loan, i've taken out two from them. the second time it was rather misleading and i thought the money would go to me and not the school, however that was not the case. they do not specify on their website where the money will go. i need a loan that goes to ME and that doesn't have a sky-high interest rate. my credit/ my co-signers credit is not a reason for high interest rates fyi.
Private 'direct to the student' graduate loans.? Any suggestions for private direct to the student graduate loans with deferrment? I looked at TuitionAnswer by Salliemae and Teri.org (Astrive and EduCash). Most of the loans I've found through Google, do not have deferrment. Any ideas? Not interested in snide remarks.
student loans & interest rates....? I have two student loans - the first one is serviced through direct loans, in the amount of 33,090 and has a 6.875% interest rate. My monthly payment are now 257.00 per month. it was consolidated in 2000. The second loan is a combo of sallie mae stafford sub and unsub loans in the amount of 103,057.00 with a 3.610 interest rate, scheduled for payment of 1057.00 per month starting 10/09. I'm wondering if it's best to consolidate all of them and when I should do that. If I consolidate, I will begin payments immediately at a 4.5% interest rate and I will pay between 500 and 700. I'm concerned that I may not be able to consolidate in the future, given the nature of the market now.... Thank you!
Lowering my not government student loans payments.? I have 2 loans through Sallie Mae that total the bulk of my student loan debt. They are not Federal Loans and therefore I cannot consolidate them through Direct Loans. I cannot afford to keep paying them, they take up 40% of my income. Any suggestions? I have 2 loans through Sallie Mae that total the bulk of my student loan debt. They are not Federal Loans and therefore I cannot consolidate them through Direct Loans. I cannot afford to keep paying them, they take up 40% of my income. Any suggestions? Someone suggested I get a second job. So i thought it might be important to add that I have one. I work 7 days a week. I am limited to where I work as a second job because of my first job. Ethics and all that stuff.
Student Loans (ICR + Consent to Disclose Tax Info)? I just finished a 9-month rehabilitation repayment program for my student loans. I was paying $140/mo for 9 months.. Now I'm dealing directly with Direct Loan services. I spoke with the lady at customer service to try and lower my monthly payment, they put me on a pgram called (ICR) Income Contingent Repayment Plan. I wanted them to lower my monthly payment and told them I make much lower than what I really make. They told me fill out 2 forms "Alternative Documentation of Income" & "Consent to Disclose of Tax Information" My question is: If I fill out theses 2 forms and send them in, and they check my IRS records and see that I make more than what I told them, will they make me pay more than what I was paying $140/mo for the student loans???
Student Loans For People With Really Really Bad Credit!? Ok so with a new school year beginning I am in need of a loan, just like 90% of the US college students, and of course I have been denied just like most of America with bad credit! I was a victim of idenity theft back in 2001 and its runied my credit miserably. I have been unable to pay off my debt because i have been in school, and not working! My family of which have bad credit so they cant co-sign.... So obiviously I have no co-signer! Now here's my issue I am transfering to a University thats about 35,000 a yr. My Finanical Aid & My Stafford Loans only cover so much... so i have had to resort to a privite loan to cover the rest of my fees, my books & my computer costs.... The problem holding me back is my bad credit!!! (which wasnt my fault might i add, yet i'm being punnished for it!!) I have been turned down now by 4 different loan companies: Wells Fargo, Chase, Astrive & Direct Loans....I am at a loss of what to do..... Does anyone have any advice or ideas for me? I already have a FAFSA award, a Pell Grant and a Stafford Loan...these were not enough to cover the costs!! i still owe the school almost 10,000.... I have compiled hours and hours of exhausting the internet and I still havent found a bank willing to take into concideration my situtition....Thus why I resorted to posting here..I AM OUT OF OPITIONS in reguards to going to a cheaper school...thats not possiable here in califrorina...after all costs added most university's public and private are going to be high. Mainly this year because of the Gov.'s budget cuts...they have virutually demolished the extra state funding for public instutions
How do repayments on student loans work? I did some research regarding prepayments that can be made on student loans, especially the way our payments get spread out through our interest and our principal. I've tried contacting Direct Loans, and they keep on stressing about how any payments that are made are first applied to my interest first. But i'm not sure if they mean the interest that is due that month, or the interest that is due from my whole loan...I've tried making multiple payments before within a month and i've noticed that they still remove interest first before decreasing my principal even for the 2nd additional payments...any help/suggestions?
