Alternative College Loans Knowledge Base
Does anyone know of any alternative loans for my son's college education? Firsty let me say I have tried sallie mae, teri, etc.(I tried every thing) The problem is my credit is not good so he needs a co signer and we can't get anyone to do it. I have been turned down from every place I tried. He was turned down because he doesn't have any credit. Finacial aid won't pay until he brings his GPA up. Are there any other sites for people with bad credit? I'm sure it will be at a higher intrest rate but at this point we are desperate. Please help if you can.
I need some serious help with college loans? Okay so my parents are divorced and neither want to help take out a parents plus loan, my only other choice is an alternative loan. I just tried getting one with suntrust, but neither of my parents were approved as cosigners. i'm really scared now, what should i do?
Where Can I Find info on Alternative Loans? I'm in desperate need of money for college and have depreciated any mode of financial aid besides Alternative loan and PLUS loans. My family does not make enough to pay for it but make to much for PHEEA, Pa's financial aid system. I was told I would be eligible for them but can't find anything on the college's website.
How come my Community College won't let me use Stafford Loans for Living Expenses? Okay, for the last 2 years I've made around $4,000 each year. I filled out FASFA and talked to the College I want to attend and they said I will get about $6,000 for tutition and books etc. with my Pell and FASFA. I asked about Stafford loans as I am an 25 year old Independent Student with no money to pay for an apartment. The school is 3 hours away, I live in the middle of nowhere (northern Michigan) and I picked this College because of the Top of the line Cisco Program they have (CCNA). The School will not allow me to take our more than $1,7500 per semester and I can only use it for gas money and tuition!!!!! How is this possible since the Stafford loans are Government Funding? So basically I can not start in January now because I don't have ~$1,000 for a down payment for an apartment. School doesn't have dorms, and my credit is not good enough, nor do I have a co-signer for a loan. I just can't believe that college is not obtainable for me in this day and age. The CCNA program is a great program and MCC is the only Community college in the state of Michigan that has it. I just feel like that since I am the one borrowing the money and the goverment pays the interenst until I am done with school that I should be able to use the money for living expenses and even a new computer since I will be taking a very in-depth computer networking course. How can they get away with this?? If people can't get the education they want, how will this economy in Michigan and the USA ever improve. Oh, this is the funniest part of the whole deal with this college!!!! They state this as their reason for there Cap limits and restrictions.... "MACOMB COMMUNITY COLLEGE LOAN POLICY 2008-09 Macomb Community College is concerned about the high debt level of our students. To minimize student debt, Federal Direct Stafford Loans can only be used to pay for direct educational expenses such as tuition, fees, books and transportation. Loan funds cannot be used to pay credit card bills for personal purchases, child support payments, car payments or other non-educational costs. We will also not approve loans for room and board expenses. There are, however, alternative loans from private lenders to assist with room and board expenses."" ahahaha, yeah lets borrow from banks instead that charge higher interest rates and the loans everyone is having problems with!! Does anybody have an advice?? Does anybody know if I can use Student Loans to pay for class and books and use the FASFA and Pell Grant for living expenses? Would this be a way around that?
Alternative loan options for re-entry to college? I'm looking to re-enter school soon, I need to pay off an old balance from when I attended a few years back before I can enroll. I already planned to take out an alternative loan for school cost, etc. as well as additional money to cover the past balance I owe. Can I take out a alternative (private) loan for school without being enrolled yet? Who would be my best option (no Sallie Mae and I do have a co-signer)?
College loans. 2nd B.S. & maxed Stafford dont qualify for Plus or Perkins. What now? OK, due to an error @ the university, and paperwork processing fubars.... My hubby needs $7500.00, in additional financial aid before next week. If we can't come up with the $, he'll have to postpone starting grad-school in August. His grad-program only does fall admissions, and waiting another year will seriously impact all kinds of things. The loans & aid for grad-school in the fall are all set. But to finish his last few courses, accelerated, we need to obviously pay for tuition.... Any suggestions? We didn't qualify for Plus or Perkins loans, and his stafford's maxed out as of monday.... Direct/alternative student loans, so far aren't working.... They won't lend to us, for whatever reason, (they'll notify us in writing within 5-8 weeks) No cosigners available. We both work, but have extenuating financial obligations. I have good, but minimal credit. His isn't all that great. Banks won't lend to us for tuition loans... They said we should qualify for student loans... Any advice? His salary will compensate for any major loans or crazy interest rates we accrue... Realistically, within about 1-2 years post grad. We're working with the university to see if there's any emergency aid available for him.
How do I get enough money in student loans to cover my mortgage payment while I am in school? I am trying to find alternative student loans to finish my college education. I am receiving enough money in stafford loans to cover my tuition, however I need more to cover my mortgage payment so I can continue school full time for 1 year. Every company I talk to says I can only borrow 60% of the tuition costs for other expenses. I need much more than that. Anyone have any other ideas?
What are some alternatives to loans for college? I got a federal loan from my college and now I need to pay the remaining $1900. My parents aren't too keen on co-signing (I don't blame them) since I have to have one at the only credit union that offers them in my area. I know credit cards are crap, but should I try them and just may the minimum payments for a while? I've tried scholarships, but I haven't been successful. What else is there that I can do? I mean to say that the credit union requires a co-signer for student loans. They aren't too keen because no one likes to co-sign on a loan.
Alternative student loans. Parents declared bankruptcy and can't cosign. Help? Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm spending my freshman year of college commuting to a local university at a reasonable cost. Between grants and loans, I'm covered by government financial aid. But after this year I'd really like to transfer somewhere else, and I will probably need to take out a few thousand dollars a year in alternative loans. The problem is, my parents declared bankruptcy this year so not only are they ineligible to take out PLUS loans, they've gotten rid of all their credit cards so they're not even building their credit back up. SO. What are my options? I'm definitely going to look for more scholarships. Are there student loans with no cosigner required? Are there student loans that would approve a cosigner with abysmal credit? Is there a way I could build my credit enough to apply for a loan myself? (doubtful) All ideas are appreciated! I have a year to figure this out, but I'm trying to plan ahead.
Denied student loans for "W" grades. Any alternative loans? I am a senior, non-traditonal student with one semester left of college. I started my college career over 20 years ago. Having said that, I had to drop classes over the years to balance work, and school. I am finally about to graduate and my school is denying me all aid including loans. How can they do this when I have a 3.0 GPA? Yeah, I dropped classes, so what? I have the right to do so, If not, why is it an option to drop classes in college to begin with? Why didn't one of the lazy office workers at my low budget CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice tell me the consequences? At any rate, I need an alternative loan, I do not have a co-signer, and my credit isn't the best. Any help would be appreciated.
A good alternative to college? Instead of going to a traditional college and graduating 100k in debt, or going to comm. college and taking out loans, I thought about 1. Not going to college immediately 2. Full time job (wherever I can get one with just a HS diploma, convenient store, whatever) 3. Study at night on my own 4. Take CLEP exams on my own (at a local comm. college) And once I have thousands of dollars saved up, maybe a car, and all this college credit, I'll then go to college to get a Bachelor's Degree, without taking out loans (which I'm afraid to do).
Does anyone know of alternative help with funding for college besides finacial aid? I asked a question yesterday on here for more details but I have been through some tragic events that forced me out of college now I have a job where I don't have enough money to pay for school. I am pretty smart I made a 26 on my ACT not saying that makes me genius or anything but I think I am more that capable to finish school. I only have like two years left until I graduate. I tried to do this program called WIA but now they are saying their funds were cut and they cannot not help. I have been searching for some type of grant or loan that could get me money so I could finish school. I feel like I have so much to offer to society but I'm stuck in this dead end situation and I'm trying desperatley to get out of it.
Is getting a loan for college haram? My parents won't let me stay at home after college and want me to pay all of my college money myself. I don't know whether getting a loan for college falls under the category of interest because all loans are interest loans and there is no way I can pay it off without interest. Also, now a days, going to college is not an option, but a necessity. I want to be a doc and can't become one without going to college. What do I do? Is there an islamic option/alternative available?
school tax credit is worth more than i earned, can i get it all back? I only earned $1000 last year but paid about $2500 in college tuition thru alternative loans. I received a tax form from school saying it's deductible. Since I only earned $1000 and wouldn't owe, I wasn't going to file but was wondering if I'd be able to get back the school money. I didn't think so but then heard friends who have kids but only earn like $20000 getting $7000 back. I'm not sure if I can get back money when I haven't earned much. If you know, please tell me b/c the same situation happened last year and I didn't file. So if I can get some $, I'd love it but I doubt it. Seems to be too good to be true.
Is anyone here in debt from student loans? I keep hearing from people who've chosen cheaper alternatives for college (such as state schools or schools that meet their full financial need) that school loans are the devil and to take out as few as possible. This may very well be true, but can I hear it from someone who's actually paying off these loans? Was your educational experience worth the debt? Thanks!
Teach For America - A good alternative after college? Any TFA graduates here? This is a loaded question, but I was thinking of perhaps doing Teach for America after I graduate college to help pay for my loans. Is TFA truly beneficial in general? If any of you happen to be TFA graduates, what was your experience like? How much work does it entail? What location did you go to? Did you go back to school after the two years and if so, did you find that it helped in any way? I intend to go to law school at some point, but I have so many loans that I feel that I should do something before I take on even more debt. Would TFA be a right choice?
I will be returning to college and am FORBIDDEN to work. Are there student loans for beyond cost of education? My husband just lost his job and I have to quit mine in September to begin a 28 month Nursing Anesthesia program. I need money well beyond the cost of attendance determined by my school, which is estimated at $28,000 per year for me. I have accepted $20,400 in Direct unsubsidized loans but need about $50,000 in aid to make it through each year. Alternative studend loans (other than government loans) are ALL based on my estimated cost of attendance. I've looked into personal loans but the loan terms are short and the payments are high. With the current economy, we have NO equity in our home. What are my options?
What are some ways to pay for college? I'm sure people have asked this before, but I'm definitely lost. I've applied for a lot of scholarships, but I just know that won't be enough. I'm just now looking into student loans and they confuse me to no end. Does anyone know any specific loans that would be good to look into or any alternative ways to pay for college? I would greatly appreciate any help...
Alternative way to pay for college? My financial aid has been suspended and I have no means of paying for college. I refuse to sit out an entire year. I have registered to attend but need to know of a place where I can get a hassle free student loan. I need a loan that won't have to be paid off until I graduate. My father would be my cosigner and he has good credit but it seems as though that isn't enough. HELP PLEASE!!!
Alternative lending for Nursing school???? I have been accepted into an excellent nursing school, to start in the fall. I am a 33yr old married mother of 2 living outside of the state where the college is, but the school is just 7 minutes from my home, and it does its clinicals and placements at the hospital where I would like to work. Here's the problem. Being out of state, I get no state aid from either state, and after government sub & unsubsidized loans, I still need $11,500 per year to go to this college. I have been denied for alternative loans because my credit isnt so good. My father has had 2 massive heart attacks and a double bypass. My family's life changed in the blink of an eye. I have put all my money (ok, my husbands money also) into keeping my father alive-his meds are expensive and at this time he is getting no help paying for these. $800 per month. He was in CICU for 23 days, 30 miles away from home and I put the rest of my life on hold to be there for him every day. To get to the point, after my dads first heart attack, I knew, I wanted to be a nurse someday. After his second, well, I was sure. He had a nurse that held my hand, while I held his. I was crying, he was holding my hand, yet heavily sedated, breathing tube, heart lung machine, a tear rolled down his cheek. I wiped it away. This nurse, she told me, you dad is a strong man, and I promise you, he will go home. He is going to make it, I didnt think he was, his doctor wasnt hopefull. His nurse told me that the man in that bed was strong, had a lot of fight in him and he will go home. Sometimes I think her encouragement is what kept him fighting, even when he was ready to let go. Her genuine concern for him is what kept him alive, and I want to give that to someone, I want to keep someone else's dad fighting. I need to be a nurse, I just need another plan for tuition. I have no cosigner~any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you..
What Loan to get for an American to study in Canada? Im going to a college (George Brown college) in toronto, ON. im looking to get a private loan but the school isnt on the list of all the banks that lend loans for study abroad students. i was wondering if there is an alternative loan i can take, opposed to a student loan. can i take a normal loan out? and just pay low monthly payments right off the bat.? any info would be appreciated, thanks!
I'm a third yr. college student & was denied aid so I'm looking n2 alternative funding what exactly is that?? I'm a third yr. college student at a 4 year university, I was recently denied financial assiastance due to academic progress to finish out the year I paid for tution out of my pocket, but I don't think I'll be able to do it the for the fall semester, so I was browsing on the internet for options, for students who were denied for finacial assistance to seek alternative funding I don't know exactly what that is will I need my parents for this or is this something I can do myself I'm only 20 so if loans are involved I'll probably need a cosigner which will involve my parents I was just wondering if anyone could really explain to me what alternative funding is, I mean will I still have to pay for my college education out of pocket until my g.p.a is back in good standing I will add that I passed all 12 credits last semester but I still have a ways to go to build my g.p.a so the letter I received still says, I was just wondering if anyone could explain this to me before I call my school.
Where can I find more money for college? Hi Yahoo! Answer-ers. I am in a bit of a pickle. I just got my financial award from my college and to say the least, I was screwed. My college raised the tuition, and now I need to find a couple grand before July. The problem is that my parents will not co-sign a loan, so I need an alternative. I work very hard at two jobs, but I still do not make enough money to pay. Any suggestions? Want to maybe send me some money?
Where does a student with bad credit go for a loan? My situation is that I'm a 24 yr. old college student who has bad credit from helping out my elderly parent with their mortgage and bills and I need money for summer school. My problem is that I received the maximum amount the FAFSA would give to pay for fall and sping semesters to pay tuition, so there is none left for the summer sessions. Even with the amount I've offered the financial aid office as a down payment for a tuition plan, they don't offer plans in the summer. I went to alternative loans and they denied due to my bad credit. does anyone out there know where I could possibly go for for a loan despite my bad credit? I'm willing to to pay a high interest loan because I need these classes to finish up.
Should I quit college and find an alternative? I’m contemplating on whether or not I wish to attend college anymore. Not drop out now, but I’m talking about after the semester is over. I’ve always done well in school. I had good grades, always on honor roll. Despite this, I hated school. I hated attending classes (but I did anyways), I hated learning things I would never need daily (geometry), and I never felt like I “fit in” there (I have plenty of friends, but I didn’t feel passionate for learning like other kids in my classes did). My major, as of now, is psychology. I do find psychology interesting, but now I just don’t know if I want to be a psychologist anymore. I’m not used to not knowing what I want. I do know that I hate commuting to school (tuition costs too much to live on campus, I live 30min. away), but even if I did live on campus I would have to drive back and forth each day to watch my brother (who is autistic). I’m stressed at home since it’s hard to concentrate (I watch my brother mornings AND afternoons, so there’s zero quiet time to do homework). Between commuting, school work, and watching my brother: I’m very tired and stressed. This is starting to affect my test scores. Has anyone tried ONLINE college courses? I’m interested in hearing about those. I appreciate any and all help, but the following is not possible: 1. Moving out. I have no money except for my bills (cell, car, and gas with maybe $20-40 to spare if lucky). 2. Live on campus. Again, I’m already relying on another relative to pay my tuition since I already used up scholarships and the federal loans are, if lucky, are $5000.
Alternative ways to pay for college? My parents are intent on making me enlist in the Air Force upon my graduation in June. In a way, I dont mind it. I'l get to serve my country, and get paid. They also pay for your schoolign while youre in, and most of it when youre out. I'll have a place to stay, and a car too. Not so bad...right? But i've always dreamed of going to collge. Right before my mom told me shes making me enlist, I completed a list of 10 schpols that I wanted to attend. I talk to my friends and everyone is talking about college and how great its going to be. Or how great it already is for them. And its like..I want to have a life for once. Ive grown up a military brat. While its nice and secure, theres no real sense of fun and/or freedom. And thats just with me being a kid. As an adult i'll be much more limited in the things I can do in fear of being kicked out. I was really look forwad to some freedom to be myself, and in the military theres no way I can do that. I only plan on staying in for 4 years, then getting out and going to be my bachelors and masters. I'll be 22 or 23 by then. Which is good I supposed. The military looks great on record. But im still not sure if its what I want to do. I know its more so what my parents want me to do, supposedly because of the recession going on. My main problem with college is the fact that I cant pay for it. Its a bit harder for military brats to get scholarships since for some reason people think we're rich. My parents arent going to help, and im working on gettinga job now. But even then, it still wont be enough. I definitely dont want to take out any loans. Im not sure how much financial aid would cover me because my parents make more than enough to send me to the schools I want to go to. I could work while I school, but I dont think id be making enough to really pay for it on time and everything. Then there's ROTC, who offer scholarships for school for sophomores and up in college. But its not guranteed...and I have no past experience in ROTC. So thats not such a good idea for me. The deadlines for 3 of the schools are coming up [they're in CA] on the 20th. Ive already taken my SAT [1530] and ACT [scores still unknown]. Its still possible for me to apply to them all on time if I work hard for the next 2 weeks. Now that youve read that...here are my actual questions. -Do you think I should apply to the schools? -What other ways would you suggest I pay for college, if I do apply and get accepted? If you have any other advice or information, feel free to share it.
Alternative Ways To Pay For College? Title kinda says it all... i'm a freshman, but paying everything on my own. fafsa didn't give me alot this year, and by winter term i'll be all out (i also did summer term ,and am in the middle of fall term now) i know loans and such are allways a option, but i hate being in debt, and rather leave it as "A-last-resort" I know a friend, who just transfered across the country to a diffrent school, but couldn't get his fafsa in time, so he has to do community college for a term over there. he said hes apart of the schools newspaper, and they pay for his classes and what not..... so i'm just wondering, other than loans, what kinda jobs are availabe out there that cater towards helping students? working at the school? et.c... thanks guys ii understand theres scholarships and what not.... but will i be able to get one before the start of winter term? how about jobs at the school.....do they cover your tuition?
Is there an alternative method to emancipation for college students? I am a college student living in a home environment that is insubstantial to my needs, which is putting it mildly. My parents have left me little choice but to move out. Unfortunately, once I move out, they will offer me no support, including FAFSA information needed for my federal loans. Is there a way that I can still collect federal loans on my OWN tax information? Do I have to get emancipated? I hear it is a grueling process that could take a few years. I have a job, but my current company is experiencing financial hardship. I don't want to leave college. I very much want my degree. But as time progresses, my relationship with my parents continues to worsen. I know that a lot of people think that this is a common occurrence among 'bratty' children (which, undoubtedly, you may believe me to be). I can assure you that in this instance, this is not the case. I am fully aware of the stress and difficult times that are ahead of me upon moving into my own home. I'm aware of the amount of money it will cost. I'm simply trying to find any way I can to still attend school and if it is impossible, then I will have to leave college. Thank you for your time and responses.
How do I apply for an alternative loan without a co signer? Hello! Im a 20 year old emancipated minor who is trying to go back to college. I got accepted into a pretty expensive school and after applying for FAFSA and Stafford Loans, I still find myself needing more money to cover my tuition, dorms etc. My mother won't co sign my loans and my father died a couple of years ago, meaning i'm kinda screwed. Any help with my situation? Also i already am paying for other loans from my last college. Does that mean i have some type of credit? Thanks for ur help!
Single mom.... any school loans or scholarships?? I am attending college full time. This school year is completely paid for with financial aid, an academic scholarship, and the federal stafford loans. However, I was looking to take out some extra money because when I am in school I do not make enough money to pay my bills and live comfortably enough to support my daughter. I tried getting an alternative loan and didn't get approved... and a co-signer isn't an option unfortunately. As I said I am a single mom, get assistance from the state, and 23 years old. Does anyone know of any school loans that aren't credit based but also don't have an interest rate through the roof? Or where I can find scholarships and grants? Thanks for your help.
College debt has ruined my life, and I'm mad at myself for leting it happen.? I am beginning to regret going to college, it seems the only thing I have attained from it, is debt. When I went to school I was allured to the dream of being an airline pilot. I finally got my pilot’s license, but it got to expensive, so I switched to Aviation Management. I am so depressed and mad at myself for letting this happen, and it seems like there is no way out. A few times I forgot to fill out the FAFSA so I had to take out loans to cover the expenses, or I was late getting it in and got no money. Here’s where I am at: 1 Loan for $50,000 (Monthly Payments of 476/mo); 1 Loan for $21620 (Monthly Payments of 128); 1 Loan for $7800 (Monthly Payments of 50), and Credit Card Debt of about $3000. So I have loans totaling $79420. I also have a car payment, cell phone, however I pay no rent, but my grandparents will soon be asking for that. I just got a new job that pays me $35000 per year. So if I don’t put anything into savings I can pay off my loans in about 4 years, however when you begin to figure in my other expenses it’s more like 7 years. Consolidation is not really an option, because the $50000 is an “Education Alternative Loan”, it’s not a federal loan. The $7800 loan is a no interest loan. And the $21620 is a direct federal loan. -My dilemma is that, I have a girlfriend that I want to begin a life with. I wish to get an apartment with her maybe in the next year or so. And I want to marry her. Situation 1- Do I put no money into savings and just tackle the loans head on? I will have no money for retirement or a down payment on a house. Situation 2- I put some money aside into savings, and it will take longer to pay off? Situation 3- Declare bankruptcy if I can? I apologize for this taking so long, but I don’t know what to do. Thank you for your help.
Student Loans Options? Please help? I would be starting college in the fall at Boston University Center of Digital Imaging Arts the total for my 2 years would be $25,800, I got a $2,000 scholarship but of course it's not enough, they have alternative loan options like Sallie Mae, PNC Bank and Wells Fargo but I dont know what to do because I know nothing about loans nor my family has ever gotten a student loan. Should I get a loan? What are the pro's & con's? Like all schools, the counselor barely explain these loan options Please help? And no the school does not do FAFSA. Should I just go to community college?
private student loans? I'm a full-time college student recieving, PELL, TAP, & Stafford loans but I still fall short. My parents can't afford to take out a parent loan for me, nor can they pay any of my college costs. So I have a signature student loan from Sallie Mae, but after the school takes their cut, I'm still falling short and with a field studies trip next semester I'm worried about money for the next semester. Can someone recommend me another alternative for more cash so I can pay any possible unforeseen costs (my car is about to go). I was looking into private student loan alternatives, but the interest rates seem OUTRAGEOUS. What are my options, I am looking to borrow ~$3000. I am already working work study. I have student loans because working full time around here really isn't an option other than walmart and even working at walmart 40 hours a week (although I know I wouldn't get that many hours) would only get $200/week and with the effect on the grades I have I'm not going to risk it. I'm going to attempt to get a job on the weekends in addition to my work study, but I know that I won't be making enough to cover those expenses. I also didn't ask for people to tell me what a bad idea it is, I know it isn't that great of an idea, I asked what provider was best, or I should have. I asked around and was told that the best way to go about it was through bank of america.
Being married in college, benefits and financial aid? So...my boyfriend and I have been together for three years. We are both freshman at a state school, we are both instate. We have been living together for two years, and we currently live together on campus. We have plans to get married after college, but after some thoughtful consideration, we wonder if we should get married now, our freshman year. My financial situation is rough. My mom doesn't make a lot of money, approx 40k a year, and my father isn't involved. I have more debt in my name that my mom does (school loan wise), and I also have alternative loans other than my government Stafford loans. His father (mom is deceased) makes about 110k a year, however we are both extremely independent and we don't want any help from our parents, or to burden them with our debt for school. Since we plan to get married, what kind of aid would we receive if we were married now? How much cheaper would tuition be? All together it's about 20k a year, and for me it's around 12k (grants processed in). His father said he couldn't have any loans in his name, so he is all set debt wise. I have done a lot of research regarding people marrying strangers to get lower tuition rates, but how exactly does it work? Would we qualify for more loans, or would we get better aid towards our tuition bills? We live on campus and plan to as well. I am going for nursing, so I have to live around the school for the last two years year round. We are also working during the school year, but not exceeding 15 hours a week part time, making less than $8 an hour. We plan to work over our summer breaks, but don't have a general idea of what we'd make. Can anyone give me an idea of how it works and how much we could save? I'd rather not be a struggling college student.
How do i pay for my last college class? I am in my senior year of college and about to finish my bachelors degree in psychology when the school tells me i have to take one more 4 credit class but only have the option of a alternative loan left to pay. (unless i pay cash...) At the moment taking that loan is not an option. I have no other loans or grants avaliable. I need to know places that help out in these kinds of situations!! I need advise asap! Thank you Thank you I do have a job and i get as many hours as i can, but times are tough and the budget has not planned for suprises from the college like this, i have been trying to get things payed down so im not in such a pickle when i have to start repaying my student loans.
how can i start building credit? I am 18 years old freshman at college 19 in a couple months. I could not dorm because i could not find a cosigner for an alternative loan. I want to know how to build credit so i can take out my own loan without a cosigner.
Financial aid for college in Alabama? Where can I look online for information & maybe apply for grants, loans, scholarships to attend college in Alabama? I want to look at alternative possibilities as well as the "usual" place to go and I would appreciate help with finding either. I will need to try all options because I may not qualify for many due to a track record which is, at best, unstable.
I owe a college money but it is not a student loan.? I owe a college money, but its not student loans. I actually owe it to the school. The issue is I had some special provisions and requests that I had documentation for and when requested I did not get them nor an alternative for those provisions. I was also told that they choose to wait till the end of semester to see if they would apply for studant loans and aid. Which at the end of semester cause no one listen I had fail several of my courses. And they refused me student loans. So my question is does the debt to the collage fall under the same rules at federal student aid?
Alternative teaching certificate?? I am not very familiar with the different kinds. I have a bachelors degree, I would like one preferably online, and to start teaching (earning money) as soon as possible. I have college loans to start paying back within 6 months.
College & Fin Aid issues? Here's my situation: I'm 24 years old and unemployed. I have been attending a state university on and off since 2004. However, due to some extreme personal circumstances, my GPA was adversely affected to the point of losing financial aid and causing the university to place me on academic suspension. That was over a year ago. I signed up for summer courses at the university and successfully passed them with flying colors. I had hoped this would bring my GPA up to at least 2.0, but it did not. I am still ineligible for financial aid. As of now, it is at 1.905 with the cumulative completion rate of 53%. That needs to be at 67% or above also. Since I was only able to afford summer classes with the help of a few people in my family, it is doubtful I would be able to attend college this fall. So, my plan was to attend community college in the meantime and earn enough credits to raise the GPA. Unfortunately, I was told by an advisor at the state university that the credits earned at any other college, including community colleges, would not count towards the cumulative GPA and completion rate at the university. In other words, this is the "Catch-22" of financial aid for me. I cannot receive financial aid unless I raise my GPA to 2.0 or above and the completion rate to 67% or above. The only way to do that is take courses at the state university. Unfortunately, I cannot afford it without financial aid, since it is practically impossible to find a job right now. I worked out my issues and I did really well last summer and I have no doubt that the trend will continue into the fall and onward. All I need to do is find means of getting money so I can attend classes in the spring and finally graduate in 2011, so I can move on with my life. I just hate that there's such a struggle for my "second chance" when I know I will do well. And yet, people are not willing to take their chances with me, and they never fail to remind me of my own mistakes in the past. I was young. I learned my lesson the hard way. That's all I have to say about this. Oh, and yes, I've applied for alternative private loans. I was denied because of bad credit, and there isn't anyone creditworthy in my family I could ask to be my cosigner. What are my options other than keep trying to find a job and save up?
Can I sue my College for...? About a year ago my financial aide department told me that I had run out of Federal Aide monies and would need to find an alternative loan to cover the remainder of my expenses. I asked them for suggestions and they told me they have a KU choice loan they have that I could apply for. Basically a high interest rate loan. So I did the necessary steps to apply. I was told the loan could take up to 90 days for processing. 4 months later, I call to see if everything is okay with my loans. I am told my loan was cancelled due to not certifying my loan docs. The school said I should have received a call, and I never did. I called the loan lender and they said this was the schools responsibility to call me. My school tells me to apply for the loan again, no big deal. 4 months later, again, same thing happens. I did everything I was suppose to. They dropped the ball by not calling me to certify my loan docs. So, on Dec on 2010, I am forced to re-apply again for the 3rd time. Fianncial aide assuring me that I have enough time to do so.So I apply again. At this point, I graduate in 6 months, so I'm freaking out. I was calling the loan company and my school a few times each week to check to make sure everything is okay. Everone assured me it was. Then I get a letter from the loan company 7 days back, saying my loan is cancelled. So, I called the loan company to see whats going on. They told me the loan sat in their system for 30 days, my school did not do anything with the documents. They said all the school had to do was recognize the dicuments and they failed to do so. All they had to do was re-open the loan. So I call the school, they try to tell me different things. I call the loan company again and get the same story. I then call school back and get another story. It took me 3 calls to get someone to listening to what I was saying. So, I wait and get told today from ym school that the loan company did not deny my loan, the school did. They say I have applied too many times. They are saying I owe 18K to continue with school. What do I do? I have worked way too hard for too long to not be able to graduate. Please help!
Alternative to AIG Bailout? Hi Folks, I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG. Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend. To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+. Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up.. So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billion that equals $425,000.00. My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend. Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let's assume a tax rate of 30%. Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam. But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife has $595,000.00. What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family? Pay off your mortgage – housing crisis solved. Repay college loans – what a great boost to new grads Put away money for college – it'll be there Save in a bank – create money to loan to entrepreneurs. Buy a new car – create jobs Invest in the market – capital drives growth Pay for your parent's medical insurance – health care improves Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean – or else Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces. If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( 'vote buy' ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President. If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+! As for AIG – liquidate it. Sell off its parts. Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the real estate. Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up. Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't. Sure it's a crazy idea that can 'never work.' But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party! How do you spell Economic Boom? I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC . And remember, The Family plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam. Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest. This was a "Joke" emailed around. Interesting how it was jumped on by "both sides.
What do you think of this alternative bailout plan? Should congress implement this? Now here's a bail out plan that works! I'm against the $85,000,000,000 bailout of AIG. Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a "We Deserve It Dividend". To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+. You don't want to even hear what I think about the stupid mortgage companies that loaned out billions of dollars to people who they knew had no way of paying back the loans, with both sides of the equation interested in one thing...fast money. But it didn't work, and now we're supposed to bail out those idiots too??? Kindest personal regards, Fr. Dave Adams ---------------------------------------- Note: How is this any crazier than the plan already before congress? BTW - I do realize this is a joke... Like I said... I merely copied and pasted this without checking the math...

How does warfare divert money from domestic social spending? on things like elementary school education, college grants and loans, roads highways and bridges spending, border security, Food And Drug administration, research grants for alternative energy, etc.... If you are against spending money on americans here at home, isn't it logical that you would prefer to spend money on warfare, and even give it away to other people in other countries than spend a dime of it here at home?
I HAVE a cosigner and need an 18,000 loan for college... where is the best place to get an ALTERNATIVE loan? I need to find a loan for 18,000 or multiple loans to equal 18,000. Where is the best place to go? It will be a certified student loan through my university. But it's still an alternative loan. I already got stafford loans, grants, and scholarships. I need an alternative loan now. Can you help? P.S. Please don't tell me to get a job or to go to a cheaper school. That won't help me very much. I have a job and my school is the best institution for what I want to do.
will federal loans cover 25k per year at a college? will federal loans cover 25k per year at a college? just curious, i am interested in attending an out of state college, and am curious to know what loans are available to reach this sum would Perkins and Stafford loans be available? What alternatives are there if federal loans are not available? thanks, thanks,
Alternative ways of granting student's college funding? I chose this as a topic to write about for a college essay. I choose this because I believe going off of parents income and self income isn't a accurate way to choose who gets the government funding. For example when in high school i had very good attendance, played sports was active in the community had a decent GPA over a 3.0. though i was only granted loans and it wasn't even enough to cover living expenses, and i work full time and live on my own. Where as my friend missed 30 day of one semester and wasn't active in any thing and had just a 3.0 had all her college payed for because her parents didn't make allot of money. where as my parents looked like they made money but after the economy hit they lost every thing and moved across the country to find a job and my dad is injured and cant work. but still no funding. so basically i need ways of how to find funding, and other rules the governments should base a new student off of.
College Loan without Parental Info? My friend is trying to get a loan for college, but his Mother, father, and step father are refusing to give him their information to prove they exist on his loan. It;s no a co-signing issue. They just refuse to give him the info he needs to prove he is their son. Is there anything he can do for an alternative? Kitty: Thing is, you still need to provide basic info such as SS number to prove your status. You cant go through the forum without providing that info. Thanks for all the help everyone! Turns out his parents are getting a divorce, so he wont need the father's info anymore and hes going with a separated option. Thanks a ton guys! :)
What are the best private student loan consolidation companies? I am getting ready to pay back my Sallie Mae student loans and they are expecting me to pay approximately $500 per month for my private loan. The only other alternative they gave me for a lower monthly payment was the Interest Only option, which I have heard is a horrible choice. Given today's economic condition and the difficulty of college graduates finding jobs, I don't know how they can expect people like myself to pay $500 per month. Are there any private consolidation companies out there right now that can significantly lower my monthly payment? Thank you!
Could I get an alternative loan for this college? I have been accepted to Hawaii Tokai International College. It is currently my first choice for school however it does not qualify for FASFA last time I checked. This is because it is a 2 year college for an associate degree. I have a 50% discount on my tuition, making it cost roughly $5000 per term. (There are four terms) My dilemma is that I have no one in my family willing or capable to help me out. Therefore I am basically on my own. With my current funds I could only afford one term's tuition. Is there any loan or American scholarship (though I dread doing them) which could help me afford it? I plan on entering in the spring. http://www.hawaiitokai.edu/ The reason I'd like to attend is because I'd love to study abroad in Japan and I have no clue what I want to major in currently.
Financial aid for college if under 24? My girlfriend wants to apply for a grant for college but she is under 24 and says she needs consent from a parent or guardian. The problem is her legal guardian, her uncle, refuses to give his information because he doesn't trust the government or something. Is there any alternative to get money? She wants to avoid applying for a loan.
College ? Alternative Loans ? I want to go to college , i received my awards letter but i'm short 6,003.50 . I can't apply for Parent Plus loans because everyone i know credit is bad . I dont have any credit so wat are my other solutions ?
Why can't I get loans from banks? and what are my alternatives? I'm 21 years old who's about to be a junior in college. For the past two years i've been getting student loans to finance my education. However, i've been denied by several banks when I try to apply for additional loans for another year. My credit is pretty decent for my age as well as my cosigner, so I don't understand why i'm not qualified.
how can i help pay my kid's college tuition if i have bad credit. Alternatives? both me & my husband have poor credit. my daughter is attending a private college on a partial sports scholarship. I know that there is a co-signer option but what if i don't have that either? I've tried to use my dad as a co-signer on a few student loan apps & he was denied. I'm running out of time and i have no idea what to do. HELP!
Financial Aid Options for College Students? Hi, I have a young friend who is the first in his family to attend college. He's worried because he's used most of his options for financial aid (federal loans and grants) and still has a significant balance to pay. His financial aid officer told him that the only option at this point is a cosigned loan from a banking institution, which is next to impossible. Does anyone know about alternative options? Your suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
Why is college important? coming from a person with a bachelors degree? That sounds stupid coming from a college graduate myself, because when you first come out of college youre working for minimal to nothing like a individual with no college experience unless youre going to college to become a doctor or a laywer (and in those profession by the time you pay off all youre loans, you near bankrupt) Yes, college was fun but what are we actually learning that we didnt learn before we went to college? Is it better to attend college out- of - state or in state, Ive did both also, I attended an HBCU (in Ohio)out of state, and being at that college was the best time Ive had (and didnt even party, it was all work and no play for me, the scenary was nice and I learned alot from my peers) but as far as money, college was waaaay more money out of state than in-state. In-state university was alright, I graduated from there.. it was decent (but nothing was like an HBCU experience). So should we encourage the kids in the future to go to college, or give an alternative?
What are the benefits of marriage, and what are the alternatives? My boyfriend and I have been living together in California, and really the only reason we haven't married is that we can't afford it. We've been together for many years and feel we deserve a nice wedding. Anyway, I'd like to know what the benefits of marriage would be if we were to get married. We are both in a lot of debt, mostly college and car loans. My credit is better than his though. Also, what are the alternatives to marriage that would grant us some of the benefits of married people?
Dilemna about college situation.? Ok, here is the deal...I work in Houston, love my job, but Im leaving in two months to go to finish last two years of the nursing degree at UT tyler which is 5 hours away. I am trying to decide between living on campus and off campus. On campus is 944 a month 1 bedroom 1 bath, ( no i dont want roommates because I do not want distractions) . The off campus apt is only a mile away(walking distance) is 565 a month plus utilities 1 bed/1bath. I'm paying my school through Stafford Loans and Parent Plus loans( im thinking of omitting because I dont really want my parents paying for it) I do not have any money, and all the money I have saved up is enough to pay off all my debts. So when I get there, I have zero. I am afraid loans is not enough for everything. I probably change my status from current employer to Per diem instead of actually quitting so I can still work when im back from nursing school during the holidays. Nursing school requires full time study. What you guys think are the options for me, paying off all my expenses in college? What other alternative out there for me? What would you do if you were in my situation?? James, You are right, I prob find a job there in Tyler, may be menial jobs but as long it covers rent. So maybe i should jutst live in campus the first year, and the last year , live off campus right? I need more suggestions...Anyone out there..
Are there any alternatives to bankruptsy? I have student loans from college and several other debts that my parents helped me acquire before I was 18 and its been very hard for me to save money and pay my bills at the same time. My #1 priority is clearing my debt and I need a way to stay current with the bills I have now and pay my remaining $18000. I've considered bankruptsy, but I am just way too young for that and I know it will look really bad if I do. I don't have credit cards and I don't shop all the time all I do is work and go to school, I just have educational debt. Bankruptcy - who cares how you spell it...its still f'd up and you know what I'm talking about! AND What's the point in wasting your time answering if your going to put an ignorant comment down rather than a solution?!?!? Ignorance is bliss :) CCC told me my debt isn't high enough
What happens when....? a student takes out an alternative loan to pay for college, has one of their parents cosign for them, then suddenly dies? Does the parent still have to pay back the money?
How to get a student loan to live on your own? I am 19 and will be moving and living on my own plus attending college. I was hoping to get a student loan to help pay for housing so I don't need to work 40/hr weeks. Anyone know the best loan to apply for? Best company? Other alternatives?
Private Student Loan,No Credit Check,Co-signer if so and Full Deferal......? All of the above is what Iam looking for, all that is in the title. I looked all over yahoo and google I FOUND NOTHING. I have a co-signer and they did a credit check and denied me. I went through Astrive, Chase, National City, Alternative College Loan, and anything that went through TERI (loan provider that is on every site in small print on the bottom of the page). Im basically screwed if I cant find a loan company that will take a co-signer but with NO CREDIT CHECK, grace period after graduation payment option, and where the loan doesn't go through the school your attending it goes directly to you. FYI: I had loans before with the same co-signer but this time his credit messed up for a some months (21 to be exact). Because they said (loan companies) if you have 21 months of good credit then your approved. But when this month came his 21 went bad and we were denied. The man im talking about is my fiance. Please help me i need it for my tuition for the Fall (august 25)
