Private College Student Loan

How can I transfer my private student loans to a credit card when my lender does not accept credit payments?

I have about $46,000 in private student loan debt at ~ 9%. I want to transfer as much as I can to a low fixed interest credit card, such as the Blue Cash American Express card (4.99% fixed APR for the life of the balance). My lender does not accept credit card payments.

  1. You need to contact your credit card issuer and ask for a balance transfer check. You can then write a check to your loan company for the amount you want to transfer to your credit card. The other option is to ask your credit card company if you can just provide them with the student loan company information and have them pay off the balance you request. Many companies will allow you to do this over the phone. If you go this route, make sure you still stay current on your payments since you will not know how quickly the transaction will be completed.
  2. I would not do this without reading your terms VERY carefully. Why? One payment late, even late by an hour or so, for the next what? bazillion years, and your interest rate will be at like 38%. Been there, done that. Don't do it.
