Private College Student Loan

What do U think Calif City backs bill to help illegal-alien students (as country goes broke)?

SANTA ANA – Leaders in this city – one of the most Latino big cities in America – are urging federal lawmakers to support a bill that would give illegal-immigrant students a path to legal residency. The City Council voted 5-0 this week to support the federal D.R.E.A.M. Act, which would also clear the way for undocumented students to get federal loans for their education. The name of the act stands for "Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors." The city's resolution is symbolic; the real debate over the proposed act will take place in the halls of Congress, not in Santa Ana's City Hall. But council members said it was important to send a message not just to lawmakers, but also to the young people of Santa Ana. "We believe in you," Councilman David Benavides said. "We stand with you." The DREAM Act would allow students who are here illegally to apply for legal permanent resident status, protect them from deportation and make them eligible for student loans and federal work study programs. Most of Orange County's Congress members have said they would vote against the measure if it comes to the floor for a vote. Only Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Santa Ana, has said she would vote for it; but she has not put her name behind the bill as a co-sponsor. The bill was sent to committees in both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives; no votes are currently scheduled. Santa Ana's resolution may carry added weight because the city has more residents of Hispanic heritage, as a percent of its population, than any other city with at least 300,000 people except El Paso, Texas. About 78.5 percent of Santa Ana residents are Hispanic or Latino, according to the latest Census estimates. About a dozen people – many of them students – came to the City Council meeting on Monday evening to urge support for the DREAM Act. Several invoked one of the city's mottoes: "Education First." Nobody spoke against the city’s resolution, although a recent poll by the Orange County Register found strong opposition to the DREAM Act. More than three-quarters of readers who participated in the poll said they do not think college students who are in the country illegally should be given a path to residency, be protected from deportation or be eligible for student loans. Only about 21 percent of the 1,631 readers who participated in the poll said they support the idea. "This is what the DREAM Act is about, education," said Councilwoman Michele Martinez, who put the city's resolution in support of the bill on the agenda. "When we talk about the American Dream, we talk about having a great time, having a family," she said. "But the foundation of that American Dream is education." http://www.ocregister.com/articles/city-act-santa-2501789-dream-education Why is it evolving that only hispanic illegals are indicated and no other race is ever included ? And do supporters of illegals think money just falls from the sky and with Caif broke how do they intend to pay for all this ?

  1. GOOD NEWS! so now they can go out in the business world and contribute even more so CA get's back on their feet. Those are the plans!
  2. I think its a BEAUTIFUL THING! Comes to show that true Americans aren't as narrow minded as you. LOL! what happened to all those so-called Americans that are against the Dream Act like you try to tell people on here LMFAO!!!!! Thanks for sharing! have a nice day.
  3. great! great! great! Comes to show that the "The DREAM Act Fact Sheet" doesn't lie. And it's proof that Americans know this to. The DREAM Act Fact Sheet The DREAM Act would help the United States meet our future labor needs. The DREAM Act would increase revenue to state, federal, and local governments. The DREAM Act is urgently needed for the talented youth graduating high school yearly. http://www.communitychange.org/our-projects/firm/our-work/the-dream-act/dream-act-fact-sheet
  4. And the leaders of California can't figure out why they are broke. Can't wait to leave this state.
  5. it's about time!
  6. Consider the alternative. Malaysia has a problem with illegal immigrants from the southern Philippines. Malaysia does not allow them to go to the public schools, with the result that the children grow up uneducated. The result is that they have no opportunities except crime. Since we seem to be unable to manage the border, it only makes sense to educate the illegals up to whatever their potential is, and turn them into productive members of society.
  7. Thats great! Help people that need help. If OJ can get away with murder and CEOs can get away with driving the country into a depressinon and get help why shouldn't I get the opportunity to pursue a higher education just because I crossed an imaginary border line.
  8. GOOD NEWS! SUPPORT THE DREAM ACT!
  9. I think Schwarzenegger will veto it as soon as it crosses his desk. Its the only thing he does well. CA is forcing all the productive, (white) people out of the state, and liberal policies will always fail, as they lack the motivation and drive to enforce or fund these insolvent measures. More bus raids and immigration checkpoints, please!
  10. yes the dream act help them yes yes yes all for it
  11. You have a very valid point-why is it always about hispanics. I don't' support the Dream Act in any way. Their parents brought them here illegally, they know at some point they are illegal and need to fix their status. Yet they do not. they wait for idiots to pass legislation to make it easy for them. It's not my fault! Want some cheese with that whine.
  12. Why doesn't California just suceed and join Mexico? I feel bad saying that since I have family there, but the state is bankrupt and they would rather help illegal aliens than their own citizens. Why do we need them? Film studios and Hollywood could move to Vegas. I'd hate to lose San Francisco, Santa Barbara and the Napa Valley, but is CA pulling enough weight to stay in the USA or dragging the country down?
