Can I still pay my Sallie Mae student loan when I'm in deferment?
I am in deferment and I still want to pay some amount off now. And I wrote a check to them once but that amount did not show up on my bank statement but showed up on the Sallie Mae statement. What does that mean?

- That means there was a problem on your bank's end. Does your checkbook balance? If it does then the money was taken out correctly, but they didn't put it on your statement. If it wasn't taken out, then is it possible that the check didn't make it onto that statement? Maybe it'll show up on the next statement. If that's not the case, then your bank messed up. But yes, you can still pay Sallie mae student loans while in deferment.
- Yes. You can make payments while in deferment. Which is good, reason said, while in "DEFERMENT" if you have SUBSIDIZED student loans the government WILL pay your interest. But any "UNSUBSIDIZED or PRIVATE" education loan you have the interest will always accrued. If you have a "FORBEARANCE" on the loans then interest will accrue regardless which will make your balance higher and you will end it paying more in the long run. So whenever you need to delay payments ALWAYS.....and I mean ALWAYS try to qualify for deferments versus a forbearance. .If your sallie mae statement shows your payment being received but not your bank statement half the time the bank has not had time to clear the payment so you may want to check with your bank again if it has been more than one week since the payment has posted . . .
