Private College Student Loan

Why am I getting Nelnet bills when I'm repaying my loans through the banks?

I just got a bill yesterday from Nelnet for almost $300 for my student loan repayments. I graduated in May and have just started paying back my student loans back through Chase (private loan) and Citibank (for government loans). So does anyone know why I'm getting this bill? The information doesn't even match up on my loan amounts so I'm just really confused.

  1. There are a few things that could have happened. 1. One of your loans may have been sold to a different company. (It happens a lot.) Contact Nelnet to find out your loan details. 2. Nelnet might be the servicer for your loan and either Chase or Citibank is the lender. Oftentimes the company you pay back is different from the one who lent you the loan. It is a little confusing. 3. Someone stole your identity. (This is highly unlikely, but it can happen.) Most likely it is one of the above. Good luck.
  2. Ask your counselors and financial aid advisers at the college that you are attending. They should be able to answer all the questions that you may have!!!
  3. Make sure that none of your government loans went through nelnet. I do all my government loans through Sallie Mae but for some reason I do have a nelnet one as well from a few years back.
