Private College Student Loan

I have student loans and when I die will the insurance policies have to pay loans?

If I have student loans and I die, will the insurance policy that I have with my husband as the beneficiary go to pay those student loans and not go to him? He is not on the student loans though.

  1. your joint debts would be due against your estate. interesting Q but I think NOT
  2. No, the money goes to him as beneficiary. The student loan folks have no right to try and collect from him, if he's not a co-signer on the loans.
  3. if they are federal loans, when the borrower dies, the loans are discharged (meaning no one pays them) the government absorbes the cost. This is why federal loans are a good deal. If these are private loans, your cosigner (whoever that is) is responsible for repaying your loans.
  4. Nope...so let all ur beneficiaries know NOT to pay student loans if u die...God forbid of course
