  1. First you have to be a minority. Then you have to be illegal. Then our government will pay for everthing.
  2. If you have a school in mind, go ahead and talk to that schools financial aid office. (hurry up, you're running out of time) If not, to apply for Federal Aid and Grants go to www.FAFSA.ed.gov How it works. You apply for aid based on your enrollment status and income. They give you a Pell Grant for their specified amount, then you can take out a Subsidised or Unsubsidised Stafford loan to pay the rest. You won't have to start repaying the loans until 6 months after you graduated. And the grants are free money. The school will usually do this for you up to a few semesters in advance.
  3. T: The US Department of Education has an excellent publication called "Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid". This is really where you should start, because the booklet explains all of the different forms of aid - things like loans, grants, scholarships, and work-study. They explain how to apply for all of these things, and they give you some insight into the criteria that are used to award them. One of your previous respondents told you that your school will fix you up with some nice "free money" in the form of Pell Grants. That could be true, but one thing you'll find out by reading this booklet is that you have to demonstrate "exceptional need" in order to qualify for a Pell Grant. Only about 1/3 of all applicants are eligible to receive a Pell Grant. Check out this booklet - you can read it online by clicking the link below, or if you'd rather not read it here, you can request a copy from any college financial aid office or from the guidance office at just about any high school. You might want to recommend it to your parents, too, because it also covers information for parents about the sources of assistance that are available to them, if they choose to help you pay for your college education. Good luck to you - I hope this booklet helps.
  4. First you need to get accepted into the university of your choice, after you are accepted then you will fill out fafsa at www.fafsa.ed.gov, then after you do that you will need to speak with a financial aid counselor at the school for further assistance.
  5. You need to apply for FAFSA. That's the application that helps you get loans and grants. You will qualify for grants and loans based on your information(mainly from income) and needs.
  6. Apply for the FAFSA, indicating the colleges you may choose or be accepted to. You do not have to have been accepted to one at that point. You need to do the FAFSA asap. Like, you would do this in January 2009, for the fall semester of 2009. That booklet another contributor recommended is a good booklet. I read it when my son started college.
  7. When applying for colleges always start with the financial aid office at that particular school. Call them up, or better yet go directly into office and talk with a representative. They should be able to help you with most of your financial aid needs. In the meantime you can check out this website for more information. http://www.schools2colleges.com/school-grants.php
